  3. tissues. It is difficult for enzymes to 
  4. attack lignin, so living organisms cannot 
  5. digest wood, with the exception of a few 
  6. specialized fungi and bacteria. Lignin is the 
  7. essential ingredient of all wood and is, 
  8. therefore, of great commercial importance.
